We have bilingual classes in year 7 and year 8. Bilingual classes give students the opportunity to learn in te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, and te ao Māori. Students also have opportunities to participate in and compete in Kapahaka.

The bilingual unit operates at Level 3, with 31% to 50% of instruction delivered in Te Reo Māori. Our aim is to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Māori culture and language among our students. We can support beginning language learners as well as more experienced speakers. Students continue to work in small groups to support their learning across the curriculum and have opportunities to listen, read and speak in te reo Māori.

We run the classes with an “additive” approach—students add a second language rather than replacing one language with another. Additive approaches are very effective educationally and aim for students to become bilingual as well as biliterate—able to read and write in two languages.

Bilingual students have full access to all the wider school opportunities, including academic extension groups, the arts and the sports academy

If you are interested in more information about bilingual education at Feilding Intermediate, please tick "bilingual education" on the enrolment form. You will then receive information about hui and the application process.
